What are Social Enterprises?
Social enterprises are revenue-generating businesses with a twist. Whether operated by a non- profit organization or by a for-profit company, a social enterprise has two goals: to achieve social, cultural, community economic or environmental outcomes, and to earn revenue.

The construction industry offers great opportunities for major contractors and suppliers to work with social enterprises to achieve positive social and economic impact on communities. FREE Construction is wholeheartedly committed to increasing social enterprise as an integral part of our procurement process. Social enterprises are businesses that exist primarily for a social or environmental purpose. FREE Construction’s mission is to share the wealth and give people a stake in the economy.
What FREE Construction does:
- Acquires revenue from construction trades, including but not limited to the following NAICS codes:
- 236115 - Building single-family houses
- 236116 - Building multifamily buildings
- 236210 - Assembly plant construction, Furnace, industrial plant, construction Cannery construction, Mine loading and discharging station construction, Cement plant construction Paper or pulp mill construction, Steel mill construction, Chemical plant (except petrochemical) construction, Pharmaceutical manufacturing plant construction, Factory construction and Food processing plant construction
- 236220 - Airport building construction, Office building construction, Arena construction, Parking garage construction, Barrack construction, Farm building construction, Radio and television broadcast studio construction, Fire station construction, Grain elevator or bin construction, Data center construction, Religious building (e.g., church, synagogue, mosque, temple) construction, Restaurant construction, Hospital construction, School building construction, Hotel construction, Shopping mall construction, Indoor swimming facility construction and Warehouse construction (e.g., commercial, industrial, manufacturing, private)

- Creates a social justice mission that acts as its core. It is clear that it is aiming to help society and shows the public how it will do so.

What FREE Construction does not do:
- Exist to make a profit for shareholders.
- Exist to make its owners wealthy
FREE Construction will strengthen the economy of the neighborhood we serve by acting as a catalyst. It cultivates neighbors’ talents and skills to meet the needs of the community, creates jobs and generates revenue. The dignity that comes from working in a non-hierarchical environment is transforming. As each neighbor is recognized as an equal and empowered to put their gifts to work, both the individual and the community are transformed.
FREE-GreenLLC will provide FREE Construction with its initial entry into the construction field. Through a mutual agreement with the contractors hired to build Desert Hot Springs, CA and Bronx NY sites. FREE Construction will be awarded 20% of the contract, local Desert Hot Springs, CA, Coachella, CA, Oakland, CA and Bronx, NY -based construction firms will be awarded 30% and the designated builder will receive the remaining 50%.
This type of opportunity will create small virtuous economies that will help the neighborhood grow and flourish. By remaining a non-profit, we are utilizing our reputation as a provider of transitional services for formerly incarcerated individuals. Simultaneously, we rebuild affordable housing and take on large contracted construction projects. We as neighbors are utilizing our construction skills and expertise to provide quality affordable home repair to neighbors and other customers while earning income to support our own families.
